The Nissan Skyline and GT-R models were first produced between 1969 and 1972 under the model code KPGC10, the model enjoyed legendary success in Japanese touring car racing. The first models gave way to a brief production run of second-generation cars, under model code KPGC110, in 1973. Then came a massive 16-year gap before the GT-R returned on 1989 in its Third Generation. This revival came in the form of the BNR32 more commonly know as the R32 Skyline GT-R. This T32 GT-R won the Japanese touring car championship Group A series four years in a row.
From 95-98 the R33 was the successor to the R32, however the engine remained mainly the same with the same turbo and gearbox but sporting different gear ratios. Improvements such as a better oil pump design we added to the engine help reliability. In 1995 the V-Spec model was born and weighed in a 10kg heavier with sporting suspension giving a lower ground clearance. The V-spec also featured an all wheel steer system, a limited slip diff, and four-wheel independant ABS.
At the same time as the release of the R33 GT-R and GT-R V·Spec, Nissan released the R33 GT-R V-Spec N1 model. Changes made in the R33 N1 are similar to those in the R32 N1. The car was made lighter by removing the ABS, air conditioning, sound system, rear wiper, and boot carpet. The R33 GT-R V-Spec N1 also received revised R33 N1 engine. The R33 ended production in November 1998.
In 1997 a Nismo 400R was released, which was a special edition of the R33. The R stood for Racing, and development and planning was completed buy Nissan Motorsports International, and the engine produced by REINIK. The car produced an impressive 400BHP and a 0-60mph performance of 4 seconds.
1999-2002 saw the introduction of the R34, and featured many incarnations such as V-Spec, V-spec II, M-Spec, M-Spec II and Nismo Z-Tune.
The GT-R didn't return until 2007 with a 3.8L V6 engine and is still in production today. However the Skyline has been dropped from the name.
