Japanese domestic market or JDM refer to Japan's home market vehicles or vehicles and parts designed to meet Japans regulations for the "home market" Known for there low mileage JDM's average around 6000 miles per year, and much less than a like for like model would be expected to clock up in the UK.
Japanese domestic market vehicles usual differ greatly from the cars that Japanese manufacturers build for export to European countries, but the cars are derived from the same platforms built in other countries. One of the reasons for this is thought to be that Japanese car owners looks more toward innovation than long-term ownership which urges the car makers to push new technologies and designs first in to the domestic vehicle market. For fine example of this would be the 03 Honda Inspire featured the first engine with Honda's Variable Cylinder Management. The same base car for export was the Honda Accord V6 (American Market variant), did not feature VCM. It wasn't until 2008 that VCM was successfully introduced to the Accord V6.
JDM Imports To Avoid For Big Power.
1988 saw the introduction of cars being limited by a voluntary scheme that limited power to 276 hp and a top speed to 111.8 mph, for safety. The horsepower limit was lifted in 2004 but the speed limit 111.8 mph remains in effect. An easy way to check for the limiter is look at the speedo, many have speedometers that register up to 111.8 mph, The good new is that certain Nissan's like the GT-R has a method build in to remove the speed limiter on a track. but all have speed limiters.
Removing the Limits
Removing the limiter is very easy but it will cost to have it done correctly. Stand alone engine management is the way to go, removed the engine brain and replacing it with an aftermarket unit ideally set up on a rolling road to match the engines performance. Cheaper CAN -Bus plug in devices are also available.
Non JDM Cars.
he general misconception surrounding JDM cars is that it simply refers to any car from Japaneses manufacturers regardless of the country the vehicle was physically made in. A prime example is the Nissan 240sx, This is in no way a Japanese domestic market car as it was only sold outside Japan. It was marketed as the Nissan Silvia in the Japanese Domestic Market by Nissan.
