The Sierra was a popular mid-size car or large family car built from 1982 to 1993. Designed by Uwe Bahnsen, Robert Lutz and Patrick le Quément it went on to become an iconic car of the 80's and early 90's. Code named "Project Toni" during development it's final name came from the Spanish word for mountain range.

First unveiled on 22 September 1982 at the British International Motor Show hosted at the NEC in Birmingham, Sierra sales began on 15 October 1982, replacing the Cortina. Its aerodynamic styling was ahead of its time and as such, many conservative buyers (including company car drivers) did not take fondly to the Cortina's replacement.

In July 1986, the Sierra RS Cosworth was launched, using the 2.0 OHC bottom end with a 16V DOHC cylinder head specially developed by Cosworth. Combined with the Cosworth Garret T3 turbocharger and intercooler setup the engine produced 204 PS (150 kW; 201 hp). It was designed by Ford's Special Vehicle Engineering (SVE) group and made in Belgium for use in group A rally events. The Sierra RS Cosworth was based on a three-door Sierra. The car was available in only 3 colours,  white, black or Moonstone Blue and just 5545 were made. The Sierra RS Cosworth was available in both right hand drive and left hand drive, the RS500 was only produced in Right Hand Drive.
