The Ford Escort Mk1
The Ford Escort Mk I was introduced the UK in late 1967. Escort production commenced at the Halewood plant in England during the closing months of 1967. It became a successful rally car, and became one of the most successful rally cars of all time. This gave rise to the Escort Mexico (1598cc "crossflow"-engined) special edition road versions in honour of the rally car.
In addition the RS1600 was developed with 1,601 cc Cosworth BDA which used a Crossflow block with a 16-valve Cosworth cylinder head. The Mexico and RS1600 were built at Ford's Advanced Vehicle Operations (AVO) facility located at the Aveley Plant. Ford also produced an RS2000 model as an alternative to the somewhat temperamental RS1600, featuring a 2.0 L Pinto (OHC) engine.
The Ford Escort Mk2
The squarer-styled Mark II version appeared in January 1975. The first production models had rolled off the production lines on 2 December 1974.
The estate and van versions used the same panel work as the Mark I, but with the Mark II front end and interior. The car used a revised underbody, which had been introduced as a running change during the last six months production of the Mark I. Rear suspension still sat on leaf springs though some contemporaries such as the Hillman Avenger had moved on to coil springs. The car came in for criticism for its lack of oddments space, with a glove compartment only available on higher end models, and its stalk-mounted horn.
The "Sport", "RS Mexico", and "RS2000" were in the performance market, the "Ghia" (2-door, 4-door) for a hitherto untapped small car luxury market, and "base / Popular" models for the bottom end.
In 1979 and 1980 three special edition Escorts were launched: the Linnet, Harrier and Goldcrest. Production ended in Britain in August 1980, other countries following soon after.
This history has made the Escort Mk1 and Mk2 an icon of a motoring age that has seen values of anything from parts to complete cars rocket in recent years.
Before You Buy A Classic Ford Escort
Like purchasing any car, we always recommend doing your research before buying a classic Ford Escort. It may have been re-shelled over the years and this could cloud its history. The vin plates are easily swapped and often removed and re attached during restoration. MOT checks and HPi checks may not reveal the hidden history. The more documented history the car has, the better. If buying on eBay, go see the car before you win the auction, check it over and only when your happy place the bid or purchase via eBay. Don't be tempted to pay there and then, complete the purchase on eBay and get the buyer protection regardless how much the seller offers you off the price. Car sales on eBay generally don't cost the seller that much. So if the seller if offering you a large percentage off then there may be a reason for it. If in doubt, walk away.
